Miranda Hollingshead, a 27-year-old woman from the small North Texas town of Bogata, planned on picking up a transmission last Friday, then decided to take visiting family members to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas for some entertainment.
It was hot. She sat in the shade and watched a YouTube video on how to find diamonds. Then something nearby sparkled in the sunlight. When she picked it up and dusted it off, she realized she’d found a diamond. A nearly 4 carat yellow diamond, to be exact.
That makes it the largest diamond found since March 2017.
Finding gems in the park isn’t uncommon. The state park reports that 319 diamonds have been registered at the park so far this year, with 13 of them weighing at least a carat.
More than 75,000 have been found since 1906, with the largest weighing in at a whopping 40 carats.
If you decide to go to take your chances, consider tuning in to YouTube first for a quick tutorial.
