Well, that didn’t take long.
After news outlets called the election for Joe Biden, Portland anarchists went out and did what they do best, they vandalized stuff. But this time they chose the Democratic Party headquarters as the target, and now it’s suddenly not cool to loot, burn, and destroy.
Mingus Mapps, a Black resident who won a seat on the Portland City Council this month, said:
“When people set fire to a building, it really does not liberate me one bit. It does the opposite. It fuels the political culture that makes racism possible.”
That’s an interesting sentiment, that people might view those who loot, burn, and destroy as bad people. It’s amazing that Mr. Mapps arrived at such a conclusion immediately after the elections and not before, say, during the 120+ days that such things have been happening in Portland.
It’s not obvious that Mr. Mapps objected when the rioters took aim at the police building, the federal buildings, or even neighborhood buildings.
