President Trump suggested delaying the elections because of potential fraud involved with mail-in voting.
“With Universal Mail-In voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good) 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”
The reaction was swift. The equity markets swooned after the tweet, and various news organizations quickly put together pieces to reject the idea.
CNN ran a story with the headline Trump floats delaying election despite lack of authority to do so, while NPR went with Trump Floats Delaying The Election. It Would Require A Change In Law.
As with all things Trump, it’s hard to tell if he was serious, or just out to make many heads explode at news outlets and Democratic offices around the nation. His suggestion also earned a few groans from Republicans, but there’s little chance that the election would be delayed. We didn’t hold off because of the Civil War or any other issue since the nation’s founding, we won’t hold off for the virus, either.
