If at first you don’t succeed…
It appears that the Trump administration is determined to end the Dreamers program that protects immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children. DHS Secretary Chad Wolf told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the administration plans to end it within six months.
“At no point in that decision did they say that the program was lawful. They simply didn’t like the rationale and the procedures that we used.”
The Supreme Court ruled the administration had not followed the law because it did not offer a reasonable explanation for ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which protects roughly 649,000 immigrants from deportation. That leaves the door open for Trump to take another shot at ending the program.
Of course, there is an alternative. Congress could actually do its job and create common-sense immigration reform, that way the nation, and immigrants such as those brought here as children, wouldn’t be left wondering how policies will change with every new president.
