Thousands of people took to the streets of Moscow and two other Russian cities over the weekend to rally against what they’re considering an online “iron curtain” in the form of tighter internet restrictions.

Russian lawmakers last month backed tighter internet controls contained in legislation they say is necessary to prevent foreign meddling in Russia’s affairs. But some Russian media said the bill is just another way for the government to censor and crack down on dissent.

The bill would route all of Russia’s web traffic through state-controlled servers, and proposes building an internet system that would allow it to continue functioning even if the country is cut off from from the rest of the world.
