It was a mistake anyone could make, but because it happened to the leader of the Catholic Church, it’s definitely news.
The Pope tweeted:
“Today we give thanks to the Lord for our new #Saints. They walked by faith and now we invoke their intercession.”
That seems normal since Catholics often call for intercession from Saints. But the people who handle the English language twitter account for Pope Francis made one little mistake. They accidentally used the hashtag #Saints with the Fleur-de-lis after it, which is the one for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.
The Pope has 1.8 million followers on his English language feed, while the New Orleans Saints have 1.5 million. The tweet went viral, with New Orleans thanking the Holy See for his blessing.
One fan tweeted:
“Praise the Lord and pass the football.”
The Saints won their game after the tweet, beating Jacksonville 13-6.
