New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the city will now fine people who refuse to wear a face mask in public. He made the announcement at the same time that the city’s rate of positive tests for coronavirus jumped above 3% for the first time in months.
De Blasio said:
“Our goal, of course, is to give everyone a free face mask. We don’t want to fine people, but if we have to we will.”
The mayor didn’t say how much the fine would be.
The new regulation expands the current rule that requires riders on city subways, trains, and buses to wear masks. Those who fail to comply can be fined $50.
