If those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it, then Illinois State Rep. LaShawn Ford wants to create millions of young citizens who will repeat the mistakes of the past.
Ford claims that current history lessons in the Land of Lincoln are racist because the books and lessons used don’t cover the contributions of minorities. His solution is to stop teaching history entirely until the lessons can be rewritten.
In a statement, Ford said:
“When it comes to teaching history in Illinois, we need to end the miseducation of Illinoisans. I’m calling on the Illinois State Board of Education and local school districts to take immediate action by removing current history books and curriculum practices that unfairly communicate our history. Until a suitable alternative is developed, we should instead devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand our democratic processes and how they can be involved.”
Ford didn’t offer an alternative structure for editing and reviewing textbooks and practices, which are typically reviewed by an academic panel at the state level.
As for his suggestion to teach civics, that could be useful, as citizens could then vote out politicians who call for ignoring history until their demands are met.
