Houston Business Man Bets $3.5 Million on Astros to Win World Series

Jim McIngvale owns Gallery Furniture Store in Houston, and goes by the moniker “Mattress Mack.”  He’s been in town for decades, and become part of the social fabric of the town.  If there’s a cause to support, or aid to be rendered, you can bet that Mattress Mack is in the thick of things.

He’s also a sports fan, and supports the hometown teams.

In 2017, Mattress Mack ran a promotion that if you purchased a certain amount of furniture or bedding and the Astros won the World Series, he’d send you a full refund.

It happened.  He refunded millions of dollars to furniture buyers, who were ecstatic that their team finished first and they got a fat check in the mail.

McIngvale ran the same promotion this year, and has now added a twist.  In addition to his clients getting a windfall if the Astros take the championship, Mattress Mack will also rake in some cash.  On Tuesday, he placed a $3.5 million bet with the DraftKings sportsbook at the Scarlet Pearl casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. He wired the money to the casino, then carried a briefcase full of cash across the floor to the sports desk.

The wager is more than all the baseball wagers placed in Mississippi casinos in June, July, and August combined.

If Mattress Mack wins, he’ll net $7.7 million.
