It seems distasteful in a number of ways, but it’s like a trainwreck, you can’t look away.
The El Paso Zoo is rolling out a successful community engagement program it ran last year. For Valentine’s Day, the zoo is allowing people to submit names of former significant others, or ex’s, which will be used to name cockroaches. On Valentine’s Day, the meerkat habitat at the zoo will be decorated with the names submitted, and then the cockroaches will be fed to the meerkats.
El Paso Zoo Event Coordinator Sarah Borrego said:
“This is a fun way to get the community involved in our daily enrichment activities. The meerkats love to get cockroaches as a snack and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by feeding them a cockroach named after your ex!”
There are probably hundreds of better ways, like focusing on your current relationship, hanging out with friends, or treating yourself to a nice meal. But if your ex is still bothering you, then this might be a way to release a little tension. Appropriately, the event is called “Quit Bugging Me!”
