GM to Spend More Than $27 Billion on Electric Vehicles Even as it Recalls Bolts Because They Catch Fire

Yes, you can buy an electric vehicle made by GM. No, you cannot charge it all the way, or it might catch on fire. And don’t store it in the garage, because it might catch fire.

But don’t leave it outside, because then your neighbors will know you own a particularly boring electric vehicle that was the best GM could muster even after taxpayers took over their pension payments and allowed the company to cancel its debt.

Don’t worry about the company though, because it has a plan.

GM says that not only is it going to spend a ton of bucks on new electric vehicles, but it’s also going to increase that spending by 35% to more than $27 billion.

If history is any guide, they will plunk out a few really cool vehicles (see the new Hummer) at huge prices, and then a bunch of everyday cars that look like they were tailor-made for Hertz or Avis.
